Question 1

How much does a new deck cost in Tacoma?

Accepted Answer

Deck costs in Tacoma vary based on size, materials, and complexity. A basic pressure-treated wood deck typically runs between $25 and $40 per square foot for materials and installation. Composite decking ranges from $40 to $70 per square foot. Multi-level designs, custom railings, and built-in features add to the total. We provide detailed written quotes after an on-site assessment.

Question 2

What decking material lasts longest in the Pacific Northwest?

Accepted Answer

Composite decking consistently outlasts wood in the Pacific Northwest because it does not absorb moisture, resist rot, or support moss growth. Leading brands like Trex and TimberTech offer 25-year or lifetime limited warranties. Among natural wood options, western red cedar with proper annual staining and sealing can last 15 to 20 years in Tacoma's climate.

Question 3

Do I need a permit to build a deck in Tacoma?

Accepted Answer

Yes, most deck projects in Tacoma require a building permit from the City of Tacoma Planning and Development Services department. This includes decks over 30 inches above grade, attached decks, and any deck with a roof or electrical wiring. We handle the entire permit process, including plan drawings and scheduling inspections.

Question 4

How long does it take to build a deck?

Accepted Answer

A standard 300-square-foot deck typically takes 5 to 10 working days from start to finish, not counting the permit approval period. Larger or more complex builds with multiple levels, stairs, or built-in features can take 2 to 3 weeks. Weather delays are uncommon during Tacoma's dry summer months but can add a day or two during the rainy season.

Question 5

What is the best time of year to build a deck in Tacoma?

Accepted Answer

Late spring through early autumn (May to October) is the ideal building season in Tacoma. The drier weather allows for faster construction and better conditions for staining and sealing. That said, we build year-round and take precautions during wetter months to protect materials and the job site.

Question 6

How do I maintain my deck in the Pacific Northwest?

Accepted Answer

Annual maintenance for a wood deck includes pressure washing to remove moss and dirt, checking for loose or damaged boards, and re-applying stain or sealer every 2 to 3 years. Composite decks require less work—an annual wash and inspection is usually sufficient. We provide a detailed maintenance guide with every project.

Question 7

Can you repair just part of my deck?

Accepted Answer

Yes. We frequently do section repairs including individual board replacement, stair rebuilds, railing repairs, and structural reinforcement without replacing the entire deck. If the foundation and main framing are sound, targeted repairs are often the most cost-effective option.

Question 8

Do you offer financing for deck projects?

Accepted Answer

We do not offer direct financing, but we can provide detailed quotes that make it easy to apply for home improvement financing through your bank or credit union. Many Tacoma homeowners use home equity lines of credit or personal loans for deck projects.

Question 9

What areas do you serve besides Tacoma?

Accepted Answer

We serve Puyallup, Federal Way, Lakewood, and the greater Seattle metro area in addition to Tacoma. Our service radius covers most of Pierce County and parts of King County. Contact us with your address and we will confirm availability.

Question 10

Are you licensed and insured?

Accepted Answer

Yes. We are fully licensed by the State of Washington and carry both general liability and workers' compensation insurance. We are happy to provide proof of insurance and our contractor licence number upon request.

Question 11

What is the difference between composite and wood decking?

Accepted Answer

Wood decking (cedar, redwood, or pressure-treated lumber) offers a natural look and lower upfront cost but requires ongoing maintenance including staining, sealing, and board replacement. Composite decking costs more initially but is virtually maintenance-free, resists rot and insects, and comes in a wide range of colours and textures that mimic natural wood.

Question 12

Can you add a pergola to my existing deck?

Accepted Answer

In most cases, yes. We install pergolas on existing decks regularly. The key requirement is verifying that the deck's structural capacity can support the additional posts and overhead weight. We inspect the deck first and reinforce the structure if needed before installing the pergola.

Question 13

How do you handle deck projects on sloped yards?

Accepted Answer

Sloped or hillside yards are common in Tacoma. We use engineered post-and-beam foundations with helical piers or concrete footings sized for the grade. Elevated decks on slopes often create usable space underneath and can incorporate stairs, lighting, and custom railing designs. We handle the engineering and permitting for hillside builds.

Question 14

What should I look for when choosing a deck contractor?

Accepted Answer

Check for a valid Washington State contractor licence, general liability insurance, and workers' compensation coverage. Ask for references from recent projects in your area. A reputable contractor will provide a detailed written quote, a clear timeline, and handle permitting. Avoid contractors who ask for large upfront payments or cannot provide proof of insurance.

Question 15

Do you remove old decks before building new ones?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Complete demolition and disposal of the existing deck is included in our new deck build quotes unless you prefer to keep the old structure for resurfacing. We handle haul-away and leave the site clean and ready for the new build.
